Life in the Lost Lane A collective of English Gentlemen |
Had a splendid weekend on the 'Sarf' Coast. As they say in some less than amazing bars "Eat, Drink and be Merry" - and I was. Less about me, more about the world... we all know about the police and Criminal Prosecution Service not charging a TV celeb/presenter this weekend for his alleged 'sex-demeanours'. The story first surfaced in the auto-biog of a Swedish ex-weather girl, then a name was blurted by Mathew Wright live on air during the journalist turned TV presenter's UK TV show on Five. The weekend after Mathew Wright of channel Five's show The Wright Stuff spilled the name, the UK's biggest selling Sunday paper printed this: "[Name of alleged] - has been missing from his seat on [the show he presented] since the sex pest claims became public - [name of alledged] had been on the prowl three nights earlier when Britain's biggest television stars collected their awards at the Albert Hall." It might just be me, but that sounds a little emotive. And then little was heard as the Tabloids back away and a war in Iraq took up the biggest share of coverage in the press. This weekend it was announced that he would not be charged. What does this story mean for fair-trial? Contempt of court? Press freedom of speech? Protection of women from the threat of abuse? Our attitudes to 'acceptable' male sexuality? Trial by media? And perhaps more central to all of this, what does the way this has all been handled mean to the victims and the alledged culprit - Is it the worst verdict for all and could it have been any different? Why don't you all have a think and spin a line on it. Go on - you know you want to. posted by E! @ 2:39 PM
